The Catalogue of Ordovician trilobites from Urals, Siberia and Middle Asia

New Noncommercial Project

“Catalogue of Ordovician Trilobites from Urals, Siberia, and Middle Asia”

We would like to announce a new scientific project, fulfilled by St. Petersburg Paleontological Laboratory. Now the scientific team led by Dr. V. G. Klikushin works on the preparation of the “Catalogue of Ordovician trilobites from Urals, Siberia, and Middle Asia”. The book will be the comprehensive guide for trilobite collectors, professional and amateur paleontologists.

The book is subdivided into 5 chapters.

Complete list with a short description of all known trilobite species and subspecies (including invalid and mistake) is presented at the first chapter – Catalogue of species. The taxons are described in alphabetical order by the genus names. For each taxon, we present the following information: complete name according to recent systematic, the catalog number, comprehensive bibliography, occurrence with stratigraphy, and locality data (including the digital codes of localities of the taxon first finding). If it is necessary, we present remarks with the previous taxon description, stratigraphy, synonyms, homonyms, etc.

The second chapter – Index of species is the addition to the first chapter for more convenient work with the catalog. Presented here is the list (in alphabetical order) of all species described in the first chapter (including synonyms, homonyms, invalid, etc.).

The third chapter – Catalogue of Localities contains the data about all localities known by the findings of Ordovician trilobites: North-West Russia, Arctic Russia, Arctic Urals, North Urals, Middle Urals, South Urals, West Siberia, Arctic Siberia, Central Siberia, South Siberia, East Siberia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan. The information for each locality is the following: digital code, geographical description, age, and composition of containing rocks. The catalog numbers of trilobites found at the locality are also listed here. The third chapter will be issued in two versions – English and Russian.

Forth Chapter – “The index of geographic names” as an addition to the previous chapter contains an alphabetical list of all geographic names, mentioned in the third chapter. The chapter is also prepared in English and Russian.

Fifth chapter – “References” contents alphabetical (sorted by the author’s names) list all publications mentioned in the catalog. The bibliography is presented in the original language but if it is necessary, the author’s names are duplicated in English.

By the end of October 2007, the volume of the book was more than 700 pages. We described 2260 trilobite species and subspecies; 2920 names were listed in “Index of species”. “The index of geographic names” contains 1045 names of localities. In a work we studied more than 3500 scientific publications, 1540 are included in “References”.

We are planning to finish the work in 1,5 – 2 years.
